Rhythm and Reason with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem: Hearing with Your Brain

Featuring Helen Sung and Guest Scientist Dr. Michael Shadlen

Rhythm and Reason with Arts and Minds and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem Featuring Helen Sung and Guest Scientist Dr. Michael Shadlen

October 11th, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem

Bringing together jazz music and science as we celebrate the way that music affects our brains and bodies.

Rhythm and Reason: Hearing with Your Brain - Our ears gather sounds which are transformed into electrical signals and then interpreted by our brain, transforming them into sounds that we recognize and understand, such as speech/language and music. Our brains are amazingly adaptable, working with the sound signals it is given and able to fill in missing pieces if the signals are weak or incomplete.

Join us for conversation and music with jazz pianist/composer and 2019 Zuckerman Institute Jazz Artist-in-Residence Helen Sung and Zuckerman Institute neuroscientist Dr. Michael Shadlen as they explore the different ways the brain listens and hears.

Rhythm and Reason is a collaboration between Arts and Minds, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute.
