Rhythm & Reason: Hurray for the Brain!

Bringing together jazz music and science as we celebrate the way that music affects our brains and bodies.

Rhythm and Reason: Hurray for the Brain! - The human brain is a wondrous thing. Its 86 billion neurons--as many as stars in the Milky Way!--enable us to experience our world through the senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. We use our brains to think, feel, remember, reflect, and imagine. Music has the power to harness all of these abilities in a uniquely complete way.

Join jazz pianist/composer and 2019 Zuckerman Institute Jazz Artist-in-Residence Helen Sung and Zuckerman Institute neuroscientist Dr. Michael Shadlen for a live musical performance and discussion. Explore how music engages our brains and how our brains, which enable us to know our world, might also help us know ourselves a bit better!

This edition of Rhythm and Reason is a collaboration between Arts and Minds, ARC A. Philip Randolph Older Adult Center, and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute.
