Featuring Dr. Diana Li and hosted by Science Friday’s Diana Montano

Cephalopod Week, Science Friday’s annual celebration of some of the smartest, most interesting invertebrates on Earth, is back for its eighth year! Every year, cephalo-fans from across the globe collectively geek out on social media about squids, octopuses, cuttlefish, nautiluses, and all the members of the cephalopod family. This year, we’re revisiting some of our Cephalopod Week classics, including deep dives on ammonites, bobtail squid, octopus neurology, squid ink, and more.

Test your knowledge with us in this SciFri Trivia Night: Cephalopod Week Edition! SciFri Trivia is a weekly gathering that’s part science-y facts, part dance party, and part pop culture romp—and it’s for anyone looking to bring together teams (or bravely play solo) to win ultimate bragging rights. It’s not all science trivia but let’s just say it wouldn’t hurt to listen to last week’s SciFri radio show. You might even catch a glimpse of recognizable Science Friday staff members!

Diana Li is the Public Programs Associate at the Zuckerman Institute, Columbia University. She’s usually thinking of fun ways to get teenagers and adults excited about neuroscience, but if you’re lucky, you might catch her wondering what life as a squid would be like. Her research has shown squid can withstand conditions equivalent to those at the top of Mt. Everest (but underwater), and, as rice-sized babies, they’re as small as evolution will allow before the physics of their swimming simply breaks. She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University where she studied the neurophysiology and biomechanics of squid swimming.

Diana Montano is the Outreach Manager at Science Friday, where she crafts live events to delight and engage science-loving audiences. Her passions include (but are not limited to) interactive storytelling, dogs, connecting science to the arts, dogs with extra long legs, and eating anything made of chocolate (not dogs). Diana joins SciFri as a facilitator for all things non-profit. In a previous life, she was the creative projects manager at Museum Hack and manager of guided tours at Lincoln Center. She earned her MA in Museum Studies from New York University and lives as close to the Brooklyn Museum as rent prices allow.

This event is part of a collaboration between Science Friday and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute and part of Cephalopod Week! For more events happening in June 2021, visit sciencefriday.com/cephalopodweek.
