"Teamwork," "two heads are better than one," "it takes a village." These familiar sayings all speak to the importance of social connection and community in our daily lives. Music and Dance are popular communal activities that create and strengthen social bonds, promoting a sense of delight and well-being. Join Steinway Artist and Guggenheim Fellow, jazz pianist Helen Sung and Neurorehabilitation researcher and dancer Miriam King along with November's guest scientist, Dr. Erica Rodriguez, for a look at the science studying how our brains enable us to enjoy music and dance together. Get ready to learn about the amygdala, how mice shimmy their way into a pecking order, and a social dance!

Dr. Erica Rodriguez is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Salzman Lab at Columbia University

Dr. Rodriguez’s research focuses on social environment and emotions. Currently, she is exploring how the dynamic social environment regulates state value representation in the mouse.

Join us to listen and move with the music, and maybe learn something new!

This event is designed for people with dementia and their care partners. Please register in advance through the Arts & Minds web page.

Rhythm and Reason is a collaboration between Arts & Minds, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute.
