Event Description

February’s theme is “Love Makes the Brain Go Wow!” Steinway Artist and inaugural Jazz Artist-in-Residence, pianist Helen Sung will perform live music and be joined in conversation by guest scientist Matthew Sachs

Matthew Sachs is a neuroscientist whose research focuses on understanding the neural and behavioral mechanisms involved in emotions and feeling in response to music. Matthew’s projects capture the patterns of neural activity that accompany uniquely human experiences with music, such as feelings of chills, pleasurable sadness, and nostalgia. Matthew is the 2019 Robert A. Burt Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience at Columbia University.

Join us to listen and move with the music, and maybe learn something new!

This event is designed for people with dementia and their caregivers. Please register in advance through the Arts & Minds web page.

Music on the Brain is a collaboration between Arts & Minds, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute.
