Neural mechanisms in hippocampal - prefrontal networks for memory and cognition
My lab uses rodent models to investigate the neural basis of memory and cognition in the mammalian brain. We combine behavior and high-density in vivo electrophysiological recordings to study coordinated activity in distributed neural circuits, in particular the interactions between the hippocampus, the brain’s memory hub, and the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s executive hub. I will present recent findings that establish prominent neurophysiological activity patterns in hippocampal- prefrontal networks that support learning and memory-guided decision making. These activity patterns enable networks to process, store and retrieve information in a state-dependent manner and at multiple timescales to mediate memory-guided behavior, highlighting a critical link between neural dynamics and cognition.
