Cephalopod Week, Science Friday’s annual celebration of some of the smartest, most interesting invertebrates on Earth, is back for its eighth year! Every year, cephalo-fans from across the globe collectively geek out on social media about squids, octopuses, cuttlefish, nautiluses, and all the members of the cephalopod family. This year, we’re revisiting some of our Cephalopod Week classics, including deep dives on ammonites, bobtail squid, octopus neurology, squid ink, and more.

We have teamed up with some of the squiddiest humans we know to bring you an amazing evening of videos, interviews and more—together, we’ll bring you stories about the mind of the octopus, what it’s like to dive for squid in the ocean around Hawai’i, and how biologists care for cephalopods behind-the-scenes at the country’s best aquariums and scientific labs. Dive deep with us!

Tessa Montague is a postdoctoral fellow in the Axel lab, studying the neural basis of cuttlefish camouflage. Tessa has a B.A. and M.Phil. in genetics from the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University, where she worked in the laboratory of Alex Schier. In 2019 Tessa was awarded a $1.4 million HHMI Hanna Gray Fellowship to fund her postdoctoral work on cuttlefish camouflage and transition to faculty.

Daniella Garcia-Rosales is a researcher and designer-in-residence in the Axel Lab at Columbia University, developing behavioral paradigms for cuttlefish camouflage. Daniella has a bachelor’s degree in art and design from The New School University and an MPS in creative technology from New York University. She is exploring and building a dialogue between design, art and neuroscience at the Zuckerman Institute.

Diana Montano is the Outreach Manager at Science Friday, where she crafts live events to delight and engage science-loving audiences. Her passions include (but are not limited to) interactive storytelling, dogs, connecting science to the arts, dogs with extra long legs, and eating anything made of chocolate (not dogs). Diana joins SciFri as a facilitator for all things non-profit. In a previous life, she was the creative projects manager at Museum Hack and manager of guided tours at Lincoln Center. She earned her MA in Museum Studies from New York University and lives as close to the Brooklyn Museum as rent prices allow.

This event is part of a collaboration between Science Friday, The Cephalopod Program at The Marine Biological Laboratory, Skype a Scientist, The National Aquarium, and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute and part of Cephalopod Week!
