Columbia University in the City of New York

Can I volunteer or work for free in a Zuckerman Institute lab?

No. In order to participate in research at the Zuckerman Institute as a Columbia or Barnard undergraduate, you must either be formally hired (and thus, paid) or be enrolled in a course related to your major/minor that provides credit for research AND receive approval from the course instructor and the lab's principal investigator (PI). Some students may also enter labs through PIs who have agreed to mentor them in connection to a summer program or other undergraduate research program. If you wish to pursue research in a Zuckerman Institute lab and have secured PI approval, but none of the above options fit your situation, please speak with your academic advisor or the director of undergraduate studies for your major. Unfortunately, Not all PIs will have funding available for undergraduate research assistants in a given year, so your best bet to gain a research opportunity as a Columbia/Barnard student is through course credit.
