Staff Associate, Transgenic Mouse

The laboratories of Dr. Thomas Jessell and Dr. Richard Axel seek to hire a Staff Associate to lead the mouse transgenic group.

Summary

The laboratories of Dr. Thomas Jessell and Dr. Richard Axel seek to hire a Staff Associate to lead the mouse transgenic group. Reporting to Dr. Axel and Dr. Jessell, the Staff Associate will work at the interface of cutting edge technology and high-impact research, driving innovative solutions for neuroscience. Having access to a variety of advanced facilities and technical resources, the Staff Associate will contribute to an intensely collaborative environment and enjoy the challenges of participating deeply in diverse scientific projects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Performs microinjections for both generations of transgenic mice and targeted mice via pronuclear microinjection and blastocyst microinjection, respectively. Generation of ES cell-derived mice via blastocyst injection, Cas9/gRna Mediated Genome Engineering Cytoplasm injection for Cas9/sgRNA, Embryo & Sperm Cryopreservation and Revival, Genotype, IVF (In vitro Fertilization)

This role will require significant consultation with lab members. Therefore, the incumbent must work in partnership and collaboratively with the lab.

Must keep up with scientific literature, introducing new methodologies as they are developed. Maintains an understanding of the ever-changing field which has evolved with the large scale mouse Knockout projects (KOMP, EUCOMM, etc).

Provides individualized training and technical support, including assistance with experimental design and advice on sample preparations.

Under the guidance of the Principal Investigators, creates and outlines guidelines and protocols for usage; oversees systems reservation in iLab and compliance for system usage. Administers monthly billing and invoicing per lab usage; assist in yearly budget planning and in determining the recharge rate for each system.

Prepares IACUC experimental protocols and implement IACUC regulation.

Performs regular and ongoing system maintenance and troubleshooting; other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigators.

 

Position Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in animal science, biological sciences, reproductive biology, or related field. Advanced degree / Ph.D. in the biological sciences or related field is preferred. At least six (6) years of prior experience in microinjection experience. Applicants must have a demonstrated track record in all aspects of transgenic mice production via DNA pronuclear injection.

Ideal candidate may possess in-depth understanding and extensive hands-on experience in DNA Pronuclear Injection in mouse zygote, including mES Cell –Mediated Gene Targeting. Prior experience performing gene targeting in mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells is preferred. Provides Technical Advice for the preparation of DNA for genotyping, microinjection or electroporation. Preparation of budgets, and submission of transgenic core grants is preferred.

Demonstrated active team player with ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships; ability to contribute effectively as a member of a small team and achieve results with limited direction; Excellent organizational, facilitation, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills, plus the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of faculty and staff. Must be able to negotiate issues and resolve problems.
