Scientific Programs Associate

The Scientific Programs Associate will work closely with the Assistant Director on the planning and managing of a number of the Institute’s scientific programs.

Summary

Columbia University’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute supports interdisciplinary neuroscience research and discovery by scientists and scholars across the university and promises to be the most comprehensive institute for brain science.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Scientific Programs, the Scientific Programs Associate will work closely with the Assistant Director on the planning and managing of a number of the Institute’s scientific programs. The overall objective of the position entails building and nurturing the Institute’s community of scientists through programming. Programs include workshops, panel discussions, running grass-root efforts, as well as other career and professional development programs that promote a vibrant culture of scientific inquiry and collaboration.

 

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Partners with the Assistant Director of Scientific Programs on the implementation and planning of programs targeted to the Institute’s scientific community.

Programs include: science communication workshops, career advancement workshops, cross-campus neuroscience seminars, the internal seminars, an academic application boot camp, and the postdoc-faculty lunch series. Tasks include but are not limited to:

review budgets, select vendors and works with IT/AV, catering, operations, and other cross functional partners to plan event needs;

day-of execution and management ensuring successful seminars and events;

creation, management and distribution of digital and printed promotional material;

management of registration and tracking of overall participation; and

analyze data and provide solutions and reporting on program outcomes and impact.

Stays current on the needs and goals of the Institute’s community of scientists; identifies gaps in programming and proposes new efforts. Creates surveys and conducts interviews with members of the scientific community, and provides curriculum suggestions for programming.

Maintains an awareness of current and best practices in graduate education and postdoctoral training environments by building networks with similar institutions and networking groups. Presents findings in meetings in order to provide the most up to date industry information.

Working with the Programs team and the Institute’s community of scientists, develops and runs a bi-annual scientific conference for internal and external scientific community members to engage and bring awareness to the Institute’s mission. Runs a bi-annual Institute retreat with a diverse attendance of members of the Institute fostering collaboration and knowledge-based growth.

Conducts outreach targeted to the Institute’s scientific community to effectively promote programs and other scientific events, in collaboration with the Internal Communications Associate.

Fields general inquires and works independently with adherence to institute policies.

Manages or attends selected functions which may be scheduled on evenings or weekends.

Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience. A minimum of 2 years of related experience.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses excellent, oral and written communications skills, project management experience and attention to details. The successful candidate is creative, proactive and engaging, flexible in nature, and possesses independent judgement. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects accurately with professionalism and commitment to exceptional quality under fast-paced conditions is required.

Master’s or advanced degree in scientific or related field is desirable. Relevant experience in an academic research position preferred.
