Magnetic Resonance (MR) Physicist (Associate Research Scientist)

The Zuckerman Institute is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to serve as the Magnetic Resonance (MR) Physicist and the Platform Team Lead/Manager to support and manage the Magnetic Resonance Platform (lab).

Position Summary

Columbia University's Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (the Zuckerman Institute) brings together researchers to explore aspects of mind and brain, through the exchange of ideas and active collaboration. The Zuckerman Institute's home is the Jerome L. Greene Science Center on Columbia's Manhattanville campus. Situated in the heart of Manhattan, at full capacity the Zuckerman Institute will house over 50 laboratories employing a broad range of interdisciplinary approaches to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly collaborative environment, labs work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers from trauma or disease. 

The Zuckerman Institute is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to serve as the Magnetic Resonance (MR) Physicist and the Platform Team Lead/Manager to support and manage the Magnetic Resonance Platform (lab). Reporting directly to the Scientific MR Research Director, the successful candidate will support Columbia University Principal Investigators with their experiment design and implementation of their experiments using the MR systems, peripheral instruments and facilities at the Zuckerman Institute.  As a Team Lead for the MRI Platform, the successful candidate will work closely with the Scientific Platforms Director on attracting new projects and customers for the MRI Platform.

The successful candidate will have the demonstrated experience and ability to meet the following position requirements:

Support Columbia University Principal Investigators with their overall MR experiment requirements.

Manage all aspects of MR platform operations to assure safe and effective conduct of experiments.

Help Principal Investigators to design and program data acquisition protocols on Siemens Prisma 3T systems.

Aid Principal Investigators in data archiving, curation, computation, and interpretation.

Train Principal Investigators and their teams to perform the above tasks, including system operation and data management.

Work closely in a team environment with MR System Engineer, MR Technician, MR Safety officer, and MR Research Manager to assure smooth operation of MR Platform investigations conducted therein.

Work closely with the MR Safety Officer, Principal Investigators, and their staff in participant screening and accommodation during experiments to assure IRB and lab policy compliance.

Work closely with Columbia veterinary and animal resource staff to assure IACUC compliance.

Interface with vendors to maintain equipment, upgrades, and service contracts.

Aid Principal Investigators in preparing grant applications, manuscripts, abstracts, and presentation materials.

Support the ZI MR Platform team and Principal Investigators in all projects and duties as needed and called for.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D., or doctorate in MR Physics or a related field including five (5) years of professional research experience and five (5) strong letters of reference from previous employment is required.  

Demonstrated service focus with the ability to interact and collaborate with multiple constituencies.

Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Ability to handle multiple projects under tight time deadlines.

Ability to lead and work as a member of a collaborative team.

The successful candidate must be flexible in nature, have a sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization.
