Grant Strategist

Summary

Columbia University’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute supports interdisciplinary neuroscience research and discovery by scientists and scholars across the university and promises to be the most comprehensive institute for brain science.

Reporting to the Director of Governance, Research Support, and Outreach, the Grant Strategist will support Zuckerman Institute faculty in grant proposal preparation. Efforts will focus on both individual faculty grants as well as large, collaborative grants that support the interdisciplinary nature of the Institute. Major responsibilities will include editing proposal sections related to narrative, aims, and research strategy as well as some project management duties for multi-PI grants. Working with senior staff and faculty, the individual will contribute to strategic decisions regarding granting efforts.

We are seeking an independent, highly motivated individual who possesses sound judgment and a proven ability to work under pressure. The incumbent must successfully balance multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines. The role requires a combined science and writing background and a thorough understanding of scientific grantsmanship. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, start-up environment.

 

Description

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Grant editing and consultation

The Grant Strategist will support the productivity of Zuckerman Institute scientists by editing and consulting on grants, particularly sections on research strategy, aims, and narratives; acquire and maintain sound knowledge of the Institute and the research priorities; use that knowledge and understanding to seek and recommend grants for individual as well as multi-investigator grants within and between disciplines.

Proposal development, coordination and management

Working in collaboration with grants management team in the Zuckerman Institute’s finance division and other University colleagues, the Grant Strategist will edit and maintain the accuracy of supporting components such as facilities and resources and ensure a smooth transition of grants through the submission process.

 

Requirements

PhD in the biological sciences or related field, including extensive writing experience; or advanced degree in journalism with deep expertise in science

Minimum of four (4) years of successful science grant writing experience or related experience in science communication field is required. Extensive knowledge of scientific granting processes, particularly in the biological sciences; successful grant writing or consulting record is vital.

Demonstrated active team player with ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships; ability to contribute effectively as a member of a small team and achieve results with limited direction; Excellent organizational, facilitation, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills, plus the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of faculty and staff. Must be able to negotiate issues and resolve problems.

In addition, the successful candidate must be flexible in nature, have sound judgment with an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
