Digital Content Manager

The Zuckerman Institute is searching for a full-time Digital Content Manager. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented science communicator/illustrator/graphic designer with a breadth of expertise in technology and the digital media environment.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Digital Content Manager drives public understanding and online engagement in neuroscience and promotes the extraordinary research at the Zuckerman Institute. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability and desire to convey complex scientific information to non-expert audiences and create compelling, dynamic content and digital products.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Drives the planned redesign of the current website, with support from an outside firm; develops a content strategy and curates and manages the website, bringing an imaginative and strategic vision to maximize our impact on various digital platforms;
Develops videos, podcasts, infographics and other digital and print products that explore and explain the work of the Zuckerman Institute and its scientists. The development of quantitative and qualitative strategies to assess targeted audience growth and engagement will be an important aspect of the position. It is important that the person be immersed in digital culture and also knowledgeable about the current workings and best practices of the digital and traditional media world.
Identifies and creates primarily digitally delivered content including, but not limited to, compelling news and feature stories about the research, public programs and other activities of the Institute that are accessible to a range of internal and external audiences.
May produce collateral print materials, as needed.
Establishes and maintains strong professional relationships with Columbia faculty, administration and colleagues across the university.
Maintains a multimedia database and performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
At least two (2) writing samples must be included with submission of application.
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of four years of related experience is required. An in-depth understanding of neuroscience is essential.
Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge of front-end web development, including content management systems such as Drupal is preferred. Experience creating visually stunning infographics, data visualizations, animations, photographs and video is highly desired.
Must possess expertise in framing stories and issues for different audiences and a sophisticated understanding of science as it relates to contemporary issues and debates. Exceptional attention to editorial detail. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, a sense of humor and a commitment to teamwork. Must be flexible, organized and capable of performing multiple tasks.
The successful candidate must have sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader Columbia University organization. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
Advanced degrees in journalism, science journalism, the sciences and/or graphic design preferred.
